Best Acrylic Concrete Sealer

Foundation Armor manufactures several acrylic concrete sealers and which acrylic concrete sealer is best for your application depends heavily on what you want your concrete to look like once sealed.

Solvent Based Acrylic Concrete Sealers

Foundation Armor solvent based acrylic sealers are designed to darken the surface of the concrete to give it a similar appearance to being wet, and enhance it with a matte to high gloss finish. If you are looking to change the color of your concrete, Foundation Armor also manufactures color packs that can be added to solvent based acrylic sealers for a semi-transparent tinted finish, or for an opaque tinted finish.

Foundation Armor solvent based acrylic sealers are as follows:

  • Armor AR350 – Darkens the surface of the concrete to make it look wet, and protects it with a low gloss finish.
  • Armor AR500 – Darkens the surface of the concrete to make it look wet, and protects it with a high gloss finish.
  • Armor AX25 – Darkens the surface of the concrete to make it look wet, and protects it with a high gloss finish. The Armor AX25 also contains additional water repellent properties, making it a great choice for pool decks.
  • Armor WL550 – Slightly darkens the concrete to enhance the color, and doesn’t leave behind a visible surface film.
  • Armor AG Brown Seal – Slightly darkens the concrete to enhance the color, and protects it with a semi-transparent brown tinted high gloss finish.
  • Amor LV15 – Darkens the surface of the concrete to make it look wet, and protects it with a low gloss finish. The Armor LV15 also doubles as a cure and seal to help aid proper curing of new concrete.
  • Armor LV25 – Darkens the surface of the concrete to make it look wet, and protects it with a high gloss finish. The Armor LV25 also doubles as a cure and seal to help aid proper curing of new concrete.
  • Armor Opaque Acrylic Color Packs – These color packs can be added to all Foundation Armor solvent based acrylic sealers, except the Armor WL550 and Armor AG Brown Seal. They will leave behind an opaque, paint-like finish.
  • Armor Semi-Transparent Acrylic Color Packs – These color packs can be added to all Foundation Armor solvent based acrylic sealers, except the Armor WL550 and Armor AG Brown Seal. They will leave behind a semi-transparent brown or gray finish.

Water Based Acrylic Sealers

Foundation Armor water based acrylic sealers are designed to enhance the concrete with a lot to high gloss finish, without darkening the surface. While you will experience a very slight color enhancement, Foundation Armor water based acrylic sealers will not offer as dramatic of a color enhancement as our solvent based acrylic sealers.

Foundation Armor water based acrylic sealers are as follows:

  • Armor WB15 – Protects concrete with a low gloss finish.
  • Armor WB25 – Protects concrete with a high gloss finish.

Solvent Based Acrylic Sealers VS Water Based Acrylic Sealers

Most people choose an acrylic sealer based on what they want the surface to look like once sealed. If you want the most color enhancement a sealer has to offer, or if you want to be able to add tint to the sealer, solvent based acrylic sealers are the best choice. If you want a slight color enhancement, but don’t want a dramatic change, water based acrylic sealers are the best choice.

A few other factors that go into choosing the best acrylic sealer for your concrete include:

  • Odor – Solvent based acrylic sealers have an odor, and that odor can stick around for a few days. Most water based acrylic sealers have little to no odor.
  • Repairs and Maintenance – Solvent based acrylic sealers are very easy to repair and maintain. In most cases, any issues that arise from application, moisture, delamination, or age can be repaired using Xylene, or the Armor Blush Repair. Water based acrylic sealers however are a little harder to repair. If issues arise from application, moisture, delamination, or age, the sealer may need to be removed and then re-applied.
  • Cost, Life, and Performance – Solvent based acrylic sealers and water based acrylic sealers are very similar when it comes to cost, life, and performance.
  • Current Sealer – If your concrete is already sealed with an acrylic sealer, you want to make sure that the new acrylic sealer is compatible with what you have down. A good rule of thumb is if your concrete is currently sealed with a water based acrylic sealer, you want to reseal with a water based acrylic sealer; if your concrete is currently sealed with a solvent based acrylic sealer then you want to reseal with a solvent based acrylic sealer.
