Wet Look Concrete Sealers – Just Exactly What is a Wet Look Sealer?

A wet look concrete sealer is a sealer that darkens the surface of any concrete material to make it look wet. In addition to enhancing the color, a wet look sealer can leave behind a matte, low gloss, or high gloss finish. The best way to achieve a wet look with your concrete sealer is to use a solvent-based, or sometimes called oil based, acrylic wet look concrete sealer. If you are looking for a matte, low gloss, or high gloss finish without a color enhancement, a water-based acrylic sealer for that wet look can offer that. Foundation Armor manufactures both solvent-based acrylic wet look sealers, and water-based acrylic wet look sealers so that you can choose the best wet look sealer for your application. We also have a variety of penetrating sealers if you are looking to protect your substrate without changing the look or color of your surface.

Wet Look Sealers – Solvent-Based Wet Look Sealers

The six most common solvent-based wet look sealers in the Foundation Armor line are the Armor WL550, Armor AR350, Armor AR500, Armor AX25, Armor LV15 and Armor LV25. The best wet look sealer for your application will ultimately depend on the type of surface you are trying to seal, what you want the surface to look like once sealed, and what you need the sealer to offer in terms of life longevity and performance.

Wet Look Concrete Sealer – Armor WL550 – Matte Wet Look Concrete Sealer

The Armor WL550 is a wet look concrete sealer designed to slightly darken the color of unsealed concrete, pavers, brick, natural stone, and other porous masonry. Categorized as a water repellent sealer, the Armor WL550 will not leave behind a visible surface film or coating. Instead, it works entirely below the surface and helps to reduce damage and deterioration by reducing water absorption through the substrate. The Armor WL550 is a great wet look concrete sealer if you are looking for a slight enhancement without having to maintain a coating. It is also the only wet look sealer that can be applied to red clay brick and natural stone.

Wet Look Concrete Sealer – Armor AR350 – Low Gloss Wet Look Sealer

The Armor AR350 wet look sealer is a popular choice for sealing concrete and concrete pavers. It offers a dramatic color enhancement with a protective low gloss finish. The visible surface film created by the Armor AR350 puts a protective layer between the substrate and the elements, reducing damage and deterioration caused by water absorption and surface abrasion. The Armor AR350 is a great wet look sealer if you are looking for color enhancement, a low gloss finish, and an added level of surface protection.

Wet Look Concrete Sealer – Armor AR500 – High Gloss Wet Look Sealer

The Armor AR500 wet look sealer for a high gloss finish is almost identical to the Armor AR350 wet look sealer in that it offers a dramatic color enhancement and protective gloss finish. The primary difference between the two is that the Armor AR350 wet look sealer offers a low gloss finish and the Armor AR500 wet look concrete sealer offers a high gloss finish. If you want the highest gloss level your concrete or concrete pavers can achieve, you want the Armor AR500 wet look concrete sealer.

Wet Look Concrete Sealer – Armor AX25 – High Gloss Siloxane Infused Wet Look Sealer

The Armor AX25 is a hybrid, high gloss wet look concrete sealer. With the Armor AX25 you get the powerful benefits of a water repellent sealer below the surface, and the aesthetic and functional benefits of a high gloss coating on the surface. It is a great wet look concrete sealer for concrete and concrete pavers constantly exposed to water, such as pool decks.

Wet Look Concrete Sealer – Armor LV15 and Armor LV25 – Cure and Seal Wet Look Sealers

The Armor LV15 and Armor LV25 are wet look sealers for new concrete. In addition to offering a wet look, they will help aid in the curing process so that the concrete is able to properly cure. The Armor LV15 offers a low gloss wet look and the Armor LV25 offers a high gloss wet look. These wet look sealers are best used on new concrete surfaces.

Wet Look Concrete Sealers – Water-Based Wet Look Sealers And Natural Sealer Options

The best way to achieve a wet look is to use the above solvent-based wet look concrete sealers. The solvent in the formula is what helps to darken the surface and bring out the natural coloring of the substrate. If you like what your concrete, brick, or pavers look like when dry, and you don’t want a wet look finish, Foundation Armor has a few great product options depending on what you are looking for.

  • Armor SX5000 and Armor SX5000 WB – The Armor SX5000 and Armor SX5000 WB concrete sealers will not provide a wet look finish. Instead, they will leave your concrete or pavers looking exactly as they do un-sealed. They work entirely below the surface to reduce damage and deterioration caused by water absorption, without changing the look or color.
  • Armor WB15 and Armor WB25 – The Armor WB15 and Armor WB25 are water based acrylic sealers that are designed to provide a low to high gloss finish. While the color of the substrate may be slightly enhanced, they won’t provide as dramatic of a color change as the above wet look sealers will. The Armor WB15 provides a low gloss finish, and the Armor WB25 provides a high gloss finish.

If you still have questions about which wet look sealer is best for your application, please don’t hesitate to reach out to a Foundation Armor product technician. They will be more than happy to help choose the best wet look sealer for your application.

Wet Look Sealers – What You Need to Know

Which wet look concrete sealer is the best wet look sealer for my application? The best wet look sealer for your application depends on the type of substrate you are trying to seal, what you want the substrate to look like once sealed, and what you want the wet look sealer to offer in terms of life longevity and performance of your concrete or natural stone substrate. While each product page offers details and photos, it is always best to try a sample on your substrate to see what the sealer will truly look like when applied to your substrate. Every Foundation Armor wet look concrete or natural stone sealer is available in a sample size for your convenience, and all orders ship same day. Here are a few wet look concrete sealer suggestions based on substrate and look:

  • Wet Look Sealers for Pavers – Pavers are very porous and will soak up more material than concrete. For that reason, color enhancement and gloss can be reduced. If you want a wet look with a lower gloss finish, the Armor AR350 is a fantastic choice. If you want the highest gloss you can get with a wet look sealer, the Armor AR500 is a great choice. If it is your first-time sealing pavers, you want to make sure you space your coats out 24 hours apart and go into it knowing a third coat isn’t always necessary, but may be needed depending on the porosity, and applicator. If you don’t want a color enhancement, but want a low or high gloss finish, the Armor WB15 and Armor WB25 are great options.
  • Wet Look Sealers for Stamped Concrete – The two most popular solvent-based wet look sealers for stamped concrete are the Armor AR350 and Armor AR500, and the two most popular water-based wet look sealers for stamped concrete are the Armor WB15 and Armor WB25. The Armor AR350 will offer a low gloss wet look, the Armor AR500 a high gloss wet look, the Armor WB15 a low gloss, and the Armor WB25 a high gloss. Whether or not you choose to go with a water-based wet look concrete sealer or solvent-based wet look concrete sealer will depend on if you want a dramatic color enhancement, and your preference to working with water-based or solvent-based products.
  • Wet Look Sealers for Poured and Broom Finished Concrete – The two most popular solvent-based wet look sealers for poured and broom finished concrete are the Armor AR350 and Armor AR500, and the two most popular water-based wet look sealers for stamped concrete are the Armor WB15 and Armor WB25. The Armor AR350 will offer a low gloss wet look, the Armor AR500 a high gloss wet look, the Armor WB15 a low gloss, and the Armor WB25 a high gloss. Whether or not you choose to go with a water-based wet look sealer or solvent-based wet look sealer will depend on if you want a dramatic color enhancement, and your preference to working with water-based or solvent-based products.
  • Wet Look Sealers for Brick – While acrylic sealers look great on brick, they don’t last. Brick is extremely porous and it creates issues with bonding. Acrylic sealers typically last anywhere from a couple of days to a few months which is why they aren’t the best wet look sealer for brick. The best wet look sealer for brick is the Armor WL550. The Armor WL550 will offer a slight color enhancement, but it won’t leave behind a surface film or coating. It will provide years of protection and life to brick surfaces.
  • Wet Look Stone Sealers – While acrylic sealers look great on natural stone, they don’t last. Natural stone is extremely porous and it creates issues with bonding. Acrylic sealers typically last anywhere from a couple of days to a few months which is why they aren’t the best wet look sealer for stone. The best wet look stone sealer is the Armor WL550. The Armor WL550 will offer a slight color enhancement, but it won’t leave behind a surface film or coating. It will provide years of protection and life to brick surfaces.

I already have a wet look concrete or stone sealer down, is that ok? Before purchasing a new wet look concrete sealer it is important to make sure there aren’t any compatibility issues. You also want to make sure there aren’t any issues with the old sealer before applying anything over it. If you apply a new sealer over an old sealer that is peeling or chipping, both sealers will fail. If you have any questions about application or compatibility, it is always best to reach out to a product technician first.

  • Solvent-based Wet Look Concrete Sealer – Solvent based acrylic wet look sealers can be applied over solvent based acrylic sealers without issue. If you currently have a water based acrylic sealer down and want to switch to a solvent based one, you may have to first remove the water based acrylic sealer. It is best to contact a Foundation Armor technician before purchasing.
  • Water-based Wet Look Sealer – Water based acrylic wet look sealers can be applied over water based acrylic sealers so long as the surface has been properly prepped for bonding. If you currently have a water based acrylic sealer down and want to switch to a solvent based wet look sealer, you may have to first remove the old sealer. It is best to contact a Foundation Armor technician.
  • Wet Look Penetrating Sealers for Concrete – Most solvent and water based wet look sealers can be applied over penetrating sealers so long as the penetrating sealers aren’t beading water, and don’t leave a visible surface film. Penetrating sealers are sealers like the Armor SX5000, Armor SX5000 WB, Armor S2000, and Armor L3000. If the penetrating sealer has color enhancement benefits, or contains some acrylic resin, like the Armor WL550, it is best to contact a Foundation Armor technician first.

What is the difference between a solvent based wet look sealer and a water based wet look sealer? There are a few things to consider when choosing between a solvent based wet look sealer and a water based wet look sealer for concrete.

  • Solvent based wet look sealers offer more color enhancement properties than water based wet look sealers. While they both offer a gloss, and they both offer many similar benefits in terms of performance, they will vary in how much color enhancement they are able to provide. If you want your concrete or pavers to look like they look when wet with water, a solvent based wet look sealer is best. If you like how your concrete or pavers look currently, and want little to no color enhancement, a water based wet look sealer is best.
  • Odor is another factor to consider when choosing a wet look concrete sealer. Solvent based wet look sealers, even low VOC solvent based wet look sealers, have an odor, and the odor can stick around for a few days until the solvent dissipates. If you are sensitive to odors, or are concerned about smells, a water-based wet look concrete sealer may be a better option.
  • A third factor to consider when choosing a wet look concrete sealer is re-application. Solvent based acrylic sealers are notoriously easy for repairing and maintaining. They can easily be repaired with the Armor Blush Repair, and when it comes time to recoat, you simply apply a fresh coat to a clean and dry surface. Water based wet look concrete sealers require a little more work, as there isn’t a solution that can re-emulsify a water-based sealer. If there are issues that arise during application, or when it comes time to recoat, you may need to remove the old water based acrylic sealer completely and start from scratch.

Concrete Sealers – Zero Compromise Quality – Virgin, Non-Recycled Resins Make a difference in the Finish and Longevity of Your Concrete or Stone Surface

Not all concrete sealers and natural stone sealers are created equal. At Foundation Armor we painstakingly formulate our line of concrete and stone sealers to the most demanding of specifications. It’s why all our water-based and solvent based concrete sealers, from those used on concrete driveways, to patio and walkway pavers, to stamped concrete walkways, pool decks, patios, and to those used on warehouse floors and other industrial applications such as polished concrete floors, are premium, industrial grade concrete sealers. Simply put, we manufacture one formula for each application type and finish, the best. Whether you are a homeowner, commercial property owner, general contractor, or facility manager, our concrete sealers will perform for years to come because they are engineered, formulated, and manufactured to stand the test of time in the most environmentally demanding and heavily trafficked areas of your home or business.
Why do our concrete sealers outperform many others in the field and last longer and stay truer to color over time? You got it, Zero Compromise Quality. Our concrete sealers are formulated to the highest standards because we understand you don’t want this going wrong, having to strip and reapply concrete sealer can be a messy job, so the formula is critical in making a sealer that is consistent, will stand the test of time, won’t yellow, or discolor in short order, and won’t require an immediate strip and reseal. One of the key components that only a few manufacturers use, less even mention, are virgin non-recycled resins. We use extremely pure, non-recycled resins in our formulations so that our sealers stand the test of time and won’t yellow or discolor as you often see on surfaces. Many concrete sealers that provide products in the lower end of the market need to meet price points some customers require, they most likely have to use recycled resins, if you are on a budget and a little risk is worth the savings, then these products can be a possible option. If you want to get a finish that is the most durable and true to color, the use of virgin, non-recycled resins is critical. recycled resins although inexpensive, have imperfections in their formulations that lend them to greater deviations in these metrics. For those who want to have a premium finish, one that they can be proud of and will stand the test of time, choose a concrete sealer that is formulated with virgin, non-recycled resins, a concrete sealer like those engineered, formulated and manufactured by Foundation Armor.
