When oil is spilled on the surface of concrete it is instantly absorbed into the surface, staining the surface of the concrete and filling in the concrete pores. When left on unsealed concrete for long periods of time, the oil will leave a deep and permanent stain that can only be cleaned with the use of harsh chemicals. While products like Oil Lift can do a great job at removing oil stains, they don't always remove all of the oil. The best way to reduce stains caused by oil spills is to seal the concrete.

When it comes to sealing a concrete floor you can use a penetrating concrete sealer, or a concrete coating. A penetrating concrete sealer will work below the surface without changing the look or color of the concrete, while a concrete coating will leave behind a visible surface film. The best protection against oil stains is with a concrete coating because the coating will put a layer between the concrete and the oil. Urethane coatings, like the Armor UTN60, are a popular choice for concrete floors but if you aren't planning on having many oil spills an acrylic, like the Armor AR500, may be sufficient. Acrylic sealers are not designed to withstand long exposure to oil however so if oil is spilled on an acrylic it needs to be cleaned immediately to avoid issues with the coating.

Penetrating concrete sealers are good short term solutions. While they will help to reduce oil stains from forming they are not capable of stopping oils stains. Penetrating sealers work within the pores which means concrete is exposed on the surface. When the oil comes into contact with the exposed concrete there is a risk the concrete will stain. While penetrating sealers do help to prevent absorption of the oil they should not be used if you plan on having lots of oil spills, or leaving oil on the concrete for long periods of time. If you are considering a penetrating sealer go for a water repellent sealer designed to repel water and other liquids. The most common water repellents sealers are Silicone sealers, like the Armor SC25, and Silane-Siloxane sealers, like the Armor SX5000.
