Surface abrasion, exposure to the elements, and age can cause once vibrant concrete to lose its color. Grays turn white and reds turn pink, vibrant browns turn natural. Solvent based acrylics, like the Armor AR350 (low gloss) and the Armor AR500 (high gloss) will darken the surface of the concrete, bringing out any dull or faded coloring. In additional to enhancing the color of the surface, they will protect the color from fading again because they leave behind a durable, long lasting, UV resistant surface film. They are easy to apply and offer a cost effective solution to bringing out the color in dull and faded concrete surfaces.

Applying the Concrete Sealer

Before applying the Armor AR350 or Armor AR500 to the concrete it is important to make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free of any other sealers or coatings. If the surface was previously sealed with an acrylic sealer, and some of the sealer is down, you want to make sure it is compatible. Here are a few simple guidelines to follow:

  1. If you previously sealed the concrete with a solvent based acrylic, there are no additional steps other than making sure the surface is clean and has had 24 hours to dry.

  2. If you previously sealed the concrete with a water based acrylic and there is still old acrylic down, you need to either remove the old sealer, or recoat with a water based acrylic. Keep in mind, it is the resins in the solvent based acrylic that darken the surface of the concrete. Recoating with a water based acrylic may not enhance the appearance of the surface at all.

When cleaning the concrete, pressure washing the surface is the most effective way to remove surface debris. Mild cleaners and spot treatments may be used, but if a residue is left on the surface from the cleaner it is important to make sure it is removed before applying the sealer. After the surface has been cleaned you want to wait at least 24 hours to allow the concrete to dry completely.

When it comes time to apply the Armor AR350 or Armor AR500, you can use a roller or a pump sprayer. One isn’t better than the other, it simply comes down to experience and application preference. While one coat may be acceptable on a recoat, two coats may be required for an even, consistent finish.
