First you must examine your application to justify if a deep penetrating concrete sealer is ideal for your circumstance. Penetrating concrete sealers are primarily used to stop/reduce liquids and impurities from absorbing into concrete. This is ideal for extending the life and beauty of concrete without the hassle of being "married" to maintaining the sealer on a regular basis. In most cases deep penetrating concrete sealers will not change the look or feel of the concrete.

What makes one deep penetrating concrete sealer absorb deeper than another? There are several factors that help a sealer absorb better including; the size of the resin and what type of agent/ liquid the resin is suspended in that will help it absorb into the concrete. Concrete is like an old sponge that's been sitting on your sink for a long time; very hard and when you try to wet it, it doesn't want to absorb liquid right away. Theoretically you want a very small resin material suspended in a liquid agent that will allow the sealer resin to be absorbed in as fast and deep as possible.

1) Resin size is a very important factor that determines how well a sealer can penetrating or absorb into a substrate (porous cement based surface). Most deep penetrating concrete sealers are a micro resin or nano resin; the smaller the resin, the better they are able to absorb into the pores of the substrate. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the larger the resin, the more the sealer will build and produce a film or layer on the surface.

2) A wetting agent is the liquid that the resin is suspended in designed to allow sealer resin to be absorbed by the substrate, in this case concrete. There are many different chemicals used as a wetting agent commonly derived from water or a petroleum distillate (A.K.A. oil/ solvent). Water-based wetting agents are usually more eco friendly, easier to apply and will allow sealer resin to absorb anywhere from 1/32” – 4”. More commonly used are solvent-based wetting agents because of their ability to aggressively soften concrete or other substrates. Solvent agents accelerate the absorbing process of the substrate allowing the sealer to be absorbed faster, deeper.

Types of deep penetrating concrete sealers.

Deep penetrating concrete water repellents.These are the most popular method for sealing concrete from within. Most penetrating concrete water repellents are manufactured from materials such as silane, siloxane, siliconate, or other forms of silica. The resins in this type of sealer are designed to absorb deep into the concrete and either chemically react to bond to the concrete or simply absorb and harden within the concrete with the sole purpose to displace any empty voids (pores, capillaries), thus creating a hydrophobic or water-resistant barrier deep within the concrete.

Concrete densifiers or hardeners are an alternative form of deep penetrating concrete sealer. These are primarily used for providing additional strength to your concrete. They are usually featured as deep penetrating concrete sealers although reducing the absorption of liquids is a secondary benefit of using a densifier/ hardener. Concrete densifiers / hardeners simply absorb into the concrete, cure, and slowly react within the concrete to form C-S-H (calcium silicate hydrate) which is a crystalline structure intended to add additional architectural support within the empty voids of the concrete. The crystals formed within the concrete will reduce moisture/vapor transmission within the range of 15-45% although... they do not repel water or other liquids from absorbing into the concrete, just simply reduce the flow rate that can pass through.


In most cases a "concrete water repellent" is the best deep penetrating concrete sealer because they are designed to stop the absorption of liquids, offering superior protection against: staining, freeze/thaw cycles, thermal expansion, etc. If you are searching for a sealer that will provide aesthetic changes such as gloss finishes then you should be searching for a gloss coating or gloss sealer not a deep penetrating concrete sealer or concrete water repellent.
