The best type of concrete sealer for increasing the strength and density of the concrete is a sodium or lithium silicate based sealer.

Armor S2000: Concentrated sodium silicate based sealer. Dilute with up to 3 gallons of water.

Armor L3000: Concentrated lithium silicate based sealer. Dilute with up to 3 gallons of water.

Silicate based sealers penetrate into the concrete and chemically react with the free lime and calcium in the pores. This reaction caused Calcium Silicate Hydrate (CSH) wihin the pores. The CSH structure formed look like tiny crystals that can only be seen under a microscope. The CSH formed from the chemical reaction is permanent.

A sodium or lithium silicate sealer can yield an up to 45% increase in strength. The issue with silicates is that you can't control how much CSH is formed, and you can't measure it. The amount of CSH formed is dependent on several factors, including:

  • The amount of free lime and calcium available in the concrete.
  • The porosity of the concrete (which controls how much sealer is absorbed).
  • The amount of moisture present in the concrete during the time of application.
  • The amount of sealer applied, how, and by who.
  • The concentration of the product applied.
  • The temperature of the air and the concrete.

Sodium and lithium silicates are very effective sealers to use for increasing the strength and density of the concrete. 2-3+ coats are often required before desired results are achieved.

Sodium and lithium silicates offer little to no other benefits, aside from those that come alone with increasing the strength of the concrete. If you want to reduce water absorption, or any of the issues caused by water absorption, a water repellent sealer should be used in place of, or addition to, a silicate sealer.

Water repellent sealers penetrate and chemically react much like a silicate, only instead of a solid crystalline barrier, a hydrophobic barrier is formed. This barrier caused water and other liquids to bead off the surface, reducing a variety of issues including cracking, spalling, pitting, staining, ice and salt damage, and the growth of mold and mildew.
