Best Concrete Driveway Sealers

The best concrete driveway sealer for your concrete driveway will depend on what you want the concrete driveway to look like once sealed, and your reason for sealing.

Look of the Concrete Driveway

If you want your concrete driveway to look unsealed, and you don't want a wet look, low gloss, or high gloss finish, then you Concrete Driveway Sealerwant a penetrating concrete sealer. Penetrating concrete sealers work entirely below the surface without changing the look, color, or finish of the concrete driveway.

The two most common types of penetrating concrete sealers are concrete densifiers and water repellent sealers. Densifiers are designed to reduce dusting and deterioration by increasing the strength and density of the concrete, and water repellent sealers are designed to reduce deterioration caused by water absroption by reducing the absorption of water and other liquids on the surface.

  • Concrete Densifiers: Armor S2000, Armor L3000
  • Water Repellent Sealers: Armor SX5000, Armor SX5000 WB, Armor SC25

One type of concrete sealer isn't necessarily better than the other, but they are very different. If you have weak or deteriorating concrete, or concrete that has chipped, spalled, or cracked, then a densifier will help to increase the surface strength of the concrete and reducing concrete dusting and further deterioration from happening. While densifiers will increase the strength, they won't stop further deterioration if the deterioration is being caused by the absorption of water or freeze-thaw cycles. For that, you would want a water repellent sealer. Water repellent sealers don't strengthen the concrete. Instead, they work to protect the concrete by preventing water and ice from deteriorating the concrete in the pores. If you have a need for both types of sealers, you would apply a concrete densifier first and then a week later, appy a water repellent sealer.

If you want a wet look, low gloss, or high gloss finish, or a color, then you want an acrylic concrete sealer. Acrylic concrete sealers are designed to enhance and protect the surface of the concrete driveway with a visible surface film. Under the category of acrylic sealers there are water based acrylic sealers and solvent based acrylic sealers. Water based acrylic sealers will enhance the surface with a low to high gloss finish, without darkening the surface of the concrete. Solvent based acrylic sealers will enhance the surface of the concrete with a low to high gloss finish, and darken the surface of the concrete to make it look wet.

  • Solvent based acrylic sealers: Armor AR350, Armor AR500

Reason for Sealing the Concrete Driveway

If you aren't concerned with what the driveway looks like once sealed, and would prefer to choose a sealer based off of what the sealer can offer, then you want to think about what you expect out of a sealer.

It is important to remember, sealers reduce and coatings stop. Penetrating sealers work below the surface of the concrete and leave the surface of the concrete driveway exposed. Sealers are designed to reduce damage and deterioration, but they can't stop it. Coatings (acrylic sealers), work on the surface. They are designed to stop damage and deterioration by leaving behind a visible, protective surface film.

Concrete Driveway Sealer Reviews

While many of the above products share some similaries, there are some minor differences between them. All of the products listed below have a 4.8-5.0 star review on FoundationArmor.com, Amazon.com, HomeDepot.com, Houzz.com, and Amazon.com.

Armor SX5000 vs Armor SX5000 WB: The Armor SX5000 and Armor SX5000 WB are both DOT approved water repellent sealers and make great sealers for concrete driveways. The difference between the two is that the Armor SX5000 is a solvent based sealer and the SX5000 WB is a water based sealer. Both concrete sealers perform equally as great when applied to concrete driveways and which concrete driveway sealer is best will depend on whether or not you prefer water or solvent based sealers.

Armor SX5000/SX5000 WB vs Armor SC25: The Armor SX5000/SX5000 WB are Silane-Siloxane water repellent sealers and the Armor SC25 is a siliconate water repellent sealer. While the Armor SX series concrete sealers are more industrial, the Armor SC25 offers many of the same benefits in terms of life and performance. The main difference is that the Armor SC25 can only be applied to very light or white concrete. When applied to gray or dark gray concrete, or brick or pavers, a white residue will form on the surface. The Armor SC25 should only be applied to white or very light concrete, while the Armor SX5000/SX5000 WB can be applied to all types of concrete, brick, and paver surfaces.

Armor AR350 vs Armor AR500: The Armor AR350 and Armor AR500 are both pure acrylic lacquer sealers that offer the same life and benefits. The difference between the two is that the Armor AR350 is a low gloss and the Armor AR500 is a high gloss sealer.

Armor WB15 vs Armor WB25The Armor WB15 and Armor WB25 are both water based acrylic co-polymer sealers that offer the same life and benefits. The difference between the two is that the Armor WB15 is a low gloss and the Armor WB25 is a high gloss sealer.

Armor AR350/500 vs Armor WB15/25: The AR products are solvent based and will darken the concrete to make them look wet, while the WB products are water based and will enhance with a gloss withough darkening the surface of the concrete.
